About Me
Teresa Wilson in front of her sculptural figures.

My practice is rooted in the exploration of the uncanny – the psychological space where the familiar and the strange collide. Influenced by Freud’s concept of the ‘return of the repressed’, my work seeks to manifest the ‘melancholy drama’ of human existence through textile sculpture, immersive installations and film. I am drawn to the tension between attraction and repulsion, creating figures and environments that occupy a liminal state between life and death, innocence and experience.

Central to my sculptural process is the act of binding and mummification. Using a wire skeleton as a foundation, I build form by layering and wrapping strips of fabric often reclaimed from hoarded old clothes. This repetitive, ritualistic labour mirrors the preservation of ancient remains such as bog bodies, where the physical form is both lost and immortalised. These figures are typically child-sized, yet they carry wizened, weary countenances that suggest a premature loss of innocence or the weight of a long-remembered trauma. By manipulating scale and texture, I aim to transform the domestic and the everyday into something unsettling and otherworldly.

My work frequently moves beyond the singular object into the creation of immersive, theatrical environments. These installations function as ‘sets’ for private dramas, often designed to be experienced by a solitary viewer. Within these claustrophobic spaces, I utilise sound, lighting and curated props to evoke the sense of a ‘lost world’. This was particularly evident in Shadows and Bones, my collaborative work with Julie Howse, which explored the submerged landscape of Doggerland. By placing sculptural puppets, organic materials and embroidered artefacts within these settings, I invite the audience to step into an alternative reality where the boundaries of memory and history are blurred.

In recent years my practice has expanded into the realm of the moving image and mechanical automata. Through film I breathe life into my sculptural characters, such as the recurring and strangely sinister figure ‘Little Noel’. These works allow me to explore narrative in a non-linear fashion, focusing on the psychological residue left behind by past events. The movement of the automata – often jerky and repetitive – emphasises the artifice of life and the inherent ‘otherness’ of the doll-like form.

Ultimately, my work is a confrontation with the abject. I use textiles – a medium traditionally associated with comfort and the body – to expose the vulnerability of our physical and mental states. Whether through a hacked doll sculpture or a life-sized textile figure, I strive to create a dialogue with the viewer’s own subconscious, forcing an encounter with the things we often choose to keep hidden. My art is not merely an observation of the uncanny, but an invitation to inhabit it, finding a haunting beauty in the decay and the ‘persistence of life’ that remains within the discarded.
